The Traditional Program

Morey Middle School offers a Traditional Middle School program. Traditional students are grouped together for the four core curriculum areas of science, math, social studies, and language arts.  The Traditional program uses the DPS literacy and math programs.  Connected Mathematics is taught in the mathematics classrooms.

The DPS curriculum is also used in Science and Social Studies. These curricula provide meaningful learning and engaging skills that will help create life-long learners. The science curriculum is also interactive and activity based.  Classes are on 90-minute blocks. Students in this program are also expected to master the regular DPS curriculum.

We have implemented the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program into our Traditional Program in 6th and 7th grades. This program helps prepare students for college eligibility who may otherwise fall short of their potential. To apply for our Traditional Program, you must fill out a first round choice form (due in January) if you live outside of Morey’s boundaries.  There is no other application required.

The High Strides Program

The High Strides Program at Morey Middle School is intended for students who want the DPS curriculum presented at a more rigorous and challenging pace.  High Strides students are grouped together for the four core curriculum areas of science, math, social studies, and language arts.

The High Strides program uses the DPS literacy and math programs.  Connected Math is taught at a faster and more in-depth pace than in the traditional classrooms.  More difficult novels and assignments help to facilitate a more rigorous curriculum in language arts.  Assignments in social studies and science classes are more challenging and project oriented.  High Strides emphasizes critical and creative thinking in all subject areas.  Classes are on 90 minute blocks.  We have implemented the rigor of Pre-Advanced Placement into the High Strides Program.

This includes academically challenging curriculum, habits of mind and scholarly skills needed by students to successfully take on advanced academics in high school and college.  To qualify, students must be “Proficient” in most content areas (Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts).

If you live outside of our attendance boundaries, you must fill out a choice form (first round due in January) and fill out the High Strides Application which requires a copy of CSAP test scores, a report card and a Morey High Strides Recommendation Form completed by a current teacher.

Highly Gifted Program

The Highly Gifted Program (HGT) at Morey Middle School is the DPS Magnet Site for Highly Gifted and Talented students. The HG/T program features a curriculum that is accelerated, enriched, and differentiated to meet these students’ needs. The program provides self-contained classrooms for the HGT students in the core subject areas of Science, Social Studies, Math, and Language Arts.

This grouping together of intellectual peers stimulates a level of in-depth discussion of topics and discourse consistently exceeding the norm.  The curriculum is focused on the elements of abstract thinking, complexity and depth.  To be identified as an HGT student, you must fill out the nomination form and the Gifted Department of DPS will notify you for a testing date.

If your student has already been identified through the district, you must simply notify the DPS Gifted Department that you would like your student to attend Morey Middle School.  No other process is required.
